Dairy farmers in Karachi have demanded a Rs. 60 per liter increase in milk prices, warning that they will set the retail price at Rs. 300 per liter if the government and local administration fail to approve a new rate.
Shabbir Dar, a spokesperson for the dairy farmers, said operating at current milk prices was no longer financially viable. He warned that farmers could independently set the retail price at Rs. 300 per liter if authorities do not issue a notification approving the increase.
Dar criticized the Commissioner of Karachi, alleging that the administration had delayed the matter despite repeated appeals and meetings instead of holding a formal meeting with dairy farmers.
He said rising petrol and diesel prices had increased the cost of cattle feed, transportation and other operating expenses, putting additional pressure on dairy farmers.
According to Dar, the price of cattle feed has increased from Rs. 800 to Rs. 1,700. He said veterinary medicines, electricity, labor and water costs had also risen significantly.
The dairy farmers’ representative urged authorities to revise milk prices based on current production costs, warning that failure to set a suitable rate could cause disruptions to the city’s milk supply.
