Hyderabad police arrested journalist Abdul Ghafoor Sarohi over an attempted rape allegation during a raid on his home.
However, he was released before midnight, and police subsequently classified the FIR as C-class, indicating a mistake in the initial investigation.
A court had earlier granted police two days of physical remand. Sarohi’s family said around 20 officers entered their Qasimabad apartment at approximately 3am after damaging the metal gate.
The case was registered at Market police station on October 8. A woman alleged that Sarohi and an unidentified accomplice attempted to rape her at her home on October 5. She also accused him of threatening her.
Sarohi complained before the court that he had been tortured in custody, prompting the judge to order a medical examination.
His family, fellow journalists, lawyers, and civil society activists protested outside the SSP’s office, alleging that the case was fabricated. Sarohi is known for criticizing Hyderabad police over their alleged failure to act against drug trafficking.
Lawyer Sajjad Ahmed Chandio said an allegation or FIR alone was not sufficient grounds for arrest. Advocate Aslam Laghari called for a transparent inquiry by the Federal Investigation Agency, alleging that local police were biased.
The allegations against Sarohi remain unproven.
