Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre has completed more than 1,500 robotic surgeries since launching its programme in October 2023 and is now planning to expand the facility to meet growing demand.
The hospital is currently carrying out eight to 10 robotic surgeries daily. Officials estimate the total value of the procedures performed so far at more than Rs600 million.
JPMC Deputy Director Dr Saddam Saleh said the number of robotic operations could rise to between 1,800 and 2,000 by the end of this year if the current pace continues.
He said patients are not charged any extra fee for the surgery, as the facility is being provided free of cost under the Sindh government’s budget.
Head of the Urology Department Dr Naresh Kumar said robotic surgery has improved the hospital’s ability to perform complex procedures with greater precision and smaller incisions.
He said an open surgery may require a 15 to 20 centimetre cut, while robotic surgery can be done through three small openings.
Dr Kumar added that the technique reduces blood loss, lowers post-operative discomfort and helps patients recover faster.
He said the technology also gives surgeons a clear three-dimensional view of the operation area during complex procedures.
