Former Pakistan cricketers Javed Miandad, Moin Khan and Basit Ali have urged the government to ensure proper medical treatment for jailed former Pakistan captain and ex-prime minister Imran Khan.
Their appeals add to growing calls from the international cricket community over the health and medical care of Pakistan’s 1992 World Cup-winning captain.
The development comes shortly after Australian captain Pat Cummins became the first active international cricket captain to publicly join calls concerning Imran’s medical care.
Pat Cummins Backs Court-Ordered Medical Assessment
Cummins expressed support for a group of former international captains who had already raised concerns over Imran’s treatment.
The Australian Test and ODI captain said he hoped the court-ordered medical assessment would be allowed to run its course. He also called for continued family visits and said Imran should be treated with dignity.
His intervention was significant because previous appeals had largely come from retired cricketers.
Earlier, 22 former international cricket captains, including prominent names from several countries, had written to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif seeking proper medical treatment for Imran.
Moin Khan Urges Other Cricketers to Speak Up
Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Moin Khan has now joined those calls.
Moin, who played under Imran during Pakistan’s historic 1992 World Cup triumph, appealed to the government and prison authorities to ensure that his former captain receives the medical care he requires.
He also encouraged other cricketers to speak publicly about the matter.
Moin said access to proper medical treatment was a basic right and urged authorities to address Imran’s health requirements.
Javed Miandad Makes Emotional Appeal
Pakistan batting legend Javed Miandad also spoke publicly about his former teammate.
Miandad became emotional while discussing Imran’s imprisonment and questioned why the former captain remained behind bars.
He defended Imran’s character and appealed for the situation surrounding his imprisonment to be resolved.
Miandad and Imran played together for Pakistan for several years and were both part of the team that lifted the 1992 Cricket World Cup in Melbourne.
Former Pakistan batter Basit Ali has also called for authorities to ensure proper treatment for the jailed former captain.
Supreme Court Ordered Imran Khan’s Transfer to Shifa Hospital
The calls come after the Supreme Court of Pakistan ordered authorities on August 18 to transfer Imran Khan from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad.
The court directed that a multidisciplinary medical board examine and treat him. It also allowed his personal physician and sister to remain involved in his medical care.
However, authorities later took Imran to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) instead of Shifa International Hospital.
A government medical panel examined him at PIMS and declared him medically fit before authorities returned him to Adiala Jail.
Imran’s family subsequently approached the Supreme Court, alleging that authorities had failed to comply with the court’s order to transfer him to Shifa International Hospital.
Government Rejects Claims of Mistreatment
The government has rejected allegations that Imran is being denied appropriate treatment or subjected to mistreatment in prison.
Officials maintain that the former prime minister has received medical attention and regular access to visitors while serving his prison sentence.
However, his family, political party and a growing number of former international cricketers continue to call for the Supreme Court’s medical directions to be fully implemented.
