Japan has approved a massive increase in its permanent residency fee, raising the cost by 1,900% from October 2026.
Under the new rules, the fee will jump from ¥10,000 to ¥200,000. That represents a 20-fold increase.
The Japanese government formally adopted the ordinance on August 25, 2026. The revised fees will take effect from October 1, 2026.
Permanent Residency Fee Rises to ¥200,000
Currently, applicants pay ¥10,000 for permanent residence-related procedures.
From October, that amount will rise to ¥200,000.
In percentage terms, the increase works out to 1,900%, making it one of the most significant changes to Japan’s immigration fee structure in recent years.
The increase had previously been discussed as a government proposal. However, the latest decision confirms that the higher fee will now be implemented.
Japan Also Changes Other Immigration Fees
Japan is also restructuring fees for several other residence-related procedures.
The current ¥6,000 flat fee for many residence status renewals and changes will be replaced by a tiered system.
Under the new structure, in-person fees will start at around ¥10,000 for stays of up to three months and rise to as much as ¥75,000 for residence periods of five years or longer.
The exact amount will depend on the type and duration of the residence status.
New Immigration Fees Take Effect in October
The revised fee structure forms part of wider changes to Japan’s immigration administration.
Foreign residents planning to apply for permanent residence or renew their status after October 1 will therefore face significantly higher costs.
The permanent residency fee increase is particularly notable because the charge will rise from ¥10,000 to ¥200,000 in a single revision.
Japan has not changed the percentage gradually. Instead, the new ordinance introduces the full increase when the rules take effect in October.
