Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said the Islamabad Expressway will be declared a motorway after the ongoing service road project is completed.
He said the 9-kilometre project was originally planned as a one-year job, but the government will try its best to finish it as early as possible.
The Capital Development Authority has started work on a new six-lane road along the eastern side of the Islamabad Expressway to replace the existing service road and improve traffic flow in the capital.
The road will run from Faizabad to Gulberg Greens. The project also includes a flyover at Faizabad to connect the road to the Islamabad Expressway and an underpass at the Lethrar Road-Khanna Bridge intersection.
Officials said the project will help reduce traffic congestion and make travelling easier for motorists.
