Islamabad Traffic Police Forced to Fine Drivers Even if There’s No Violation
Islamabad Traffic Police has verbally instructed field wardens to issue 50 traffic challans and register two FIRs every day, sources told ProPakistani.
Wardens have been told that their duty will not end until they complete the daily target of 50 challans.
The reported targets could produce a large number of cases every day. Based on the estimated number of wardens deployed in the field, even a lower enforcement rate could result in thousands of challans across Islamabad.
Sources said more than 50 wardens are currently working on the ground. For example, if 50 wardens each issue 20 challans in a day, the total would come to 1,000 challans. Meeting the full target of 50 each would take the daily figure to about 2,500 challans.
Sources further said wardens have recently increased enforcement against bikers and captains working under ride-hailing apps like inDrive and Bykea.
The instructions have also triggered questions over whether the primary focus is road safety and compliance or revenue generation through increased enforcement.
Islamabad Traffic Police is already collecting an additional Rs. 2,000 for same-day issuance of driving licenses, sources added. Questions have also been raised over how these additional collections are being utilized, sources added.
