On the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Asif Ali Zardari has promulgated an ordinance to protect Islamabad Capital Territory’s Safe City cameras and surveillance infrastructure and ensure compensation for any damage caused to them.
According to a press release issued by the President Secretariat Media in Islamabad, the ordinance aims to safeguard the Safe City system from damage and recover losses if any occur.
The ordinance states that fines will be imposed on anyone who damages the infrastructure or incites others to do so.
Anyone found damaging a camera or causing other loss to the infrastructure will be fined Rs2 million. If such damage occurs during protests, rallies, processions, public gatherings, sit-ins or strikes, the organisers will also be held responsible.
The amount of the fine and the cost of the damage will be determined by an authorised officer after giving the relevant person an opportunity to be heard.
The concerned person will have the right to appeal the fine or damage assessment before the court of the district and sessions judge in Islamabad within 30 days.
The recovered amount will be used for the repair and replacement of Safe City cameras and surveillance infrastructure.
If the fine or compensation is not paid, the amount may be recovered as arrears of land revenue.
