Transporters have demanded roughly Rs. 280 million for containers currently stuck in Islamabad.
Nearly 1,000 containers belonging to goods transporters have been held in Islamabad for around two weeks. This has caused financial losses to the tune of Rs. 20,000 daily, according to the All Pakistan Goods Transport Owners Association.
Advocate Muhammad Owais Chaudhry said the containers have been parked at different intersections across Islamabad and are carrying goods worth millions of rupees.
He called for the immediate release of containers carrying essential medicines and other essential goods, saying the government should take urgent action to prevent further losses.
According to Chaudhry, transporters are facing daily demurrage and detention charges because the containers have remained parked for an extended period.
He urged the government to compensate affected transporters instead of limiting its response to announcements. He also called for a clear and transparent mechanism for compensation.
Chaudhry said the government should compile complete data on vehicles detained from different cities and pay transporters Rs. 20,000 per container per day as compensation.
He also called for the immediate release of all containers carrying essential goods and urged the government to sit with transporters to agree on a mechanism for compensating their losses.
