Intel could release new processors for older PCs in 2027, giving buyers a way to avoid the high cost of upgrading to DDR5 memory. The move could allow users with compatible motherboards to upgrade their computers without paying significantly more for newer memory.
According to motherboard maker Gigabyte, Intel is preparing new processors for its LGA 1700 socket, which first launched in 2021. Although the platform is now five years old, it could receive new CPUs as rising memory prices make older systems more attractive.
Cheaper DDR4 Memory
The main reason for a possible refresh is the price difference between DDR4 and DDR5 memory. Intel’s LGA 1700 platform supports both types, allowing users to build PCs with cheaper DDR4 RAM instead of paying more for DDR5.
Intel could release updated versions of its Raptor Lake and Alder Lake processors that work with existing DDR4 motherboards. This would give buyers another option for building or upgrading a PC without switching to a newer platform.
A 32GB DDR4 memory kit currently costs around $210, while a comparable DDR5 kit can cost more than $480.
Older CPUs Will Remain Available
Intel has not officially confirmed plans to release new processors for LGA 1700. However, Intel Vice President Robert Hallock recently said Raptor Lake CPUs would remain available for “years to come.”
Hallock also highlighted DDR4 support as a reason the platform remains useful, noting that many buyers are still interested in computers that use the older memory standard.
DDR4 Still Works Well
Although DDR5 is faster than DDR4, the difference in gaming performance can be relatively small. Tests have found that DDR5 can improve frame rates by around 1% to 10%, depending on the game, resolution, and graphics card.
For buyers building budget gaming PCs, the savings from using DDR4 could outweigh the performance gains offered by DDR5.
If the reports prove accurate, Intel could extend the life of its LGA 1700 platform well beyond a typical socket cycle. Updated processors that support older motherboards could give budget-conscious buyers a more affordable way to build or upgrade a PC while DDR5 prices remain high.
