Instagram has updated the look of its branding for the first time in 10 years, introducing a redesigned wordmark.
The Meta-owned platform has not changed its famous app icon. The familiar pink, orange and purple gradient logo remains exactly the same. Instead, Instagram has only changed how the word “Instagram” appears alongside the icon.
The biggest difference comes from the new font. Instagram has introduced softer curves and a more handwritten look. The changes are particularly noticeable in letters such as “s,” “g” and “r.”
However, the redesign has already attracted plenty of attention online. Some users have joked that the new lettering makes the brand name look more like “Instagzam” than Instagram. The unusual appearance has also inspired memes and humorous reactions across social media.
Instagram Explains Why It Changed the Wordmark
Instagram chief Adam Mosseri announced the redesign on the platform. He said the company had used the previous wordmark for around a decade and decided that it was time for an update.
According to Mosseri, the new design still includes elements inspired by Instagram’s original visual identity. At the same time, the company wanted to make the lettering feel simpler, cleaner and more suitable for its current brand.
Mosseri also shared the redesigned wordmark on Threads. He encouraged users to give their opinions and react to the updated look.
Despite the attention surrounding the change, Instagram has kept its most recognizable visual element untouched. The company has not redesigned the gradient camera icon that users see on their phones and across the platform.
For now, most users will mainly notice the new typography whenever Instagram displays its full brand name next to the app symbol.
The update represents a relatively small visual change, but after 10 years with the same wordmark, even a new font has been enough to generate a major reaction online.
