Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday said India had proven itself an enemy of peace by unilaterally suspending the Indus Waters Treaty and warned that Pakistan would not compromise on its water rights.
The PM paid tribute to the armed forces and the martyrs of Operation Haq, saying the military’s success had restored national pride. He particularly praised Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and the leadership of the Pakistan Air Force and Pakistan Navy.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony of the Monument of Victory in Islamabad on Independence Day, the prime minister declared that every drop of Pakistan’s water was a “red line” and warned that Islamabad would respond directly if India did not reverse its course.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif jointly inaugurated the monument.
The prime minister said the monument was completed in just eight months and credited Field Marshal Asim Munir’s personal interest in the project.
Shehbaz said Pakistan’s desire for peace should not be interpreted as weakness.
Referring to the 2025 skirmish with India, he said the message of Pakistan’s military response had reached the international community and that India’s defeat would remain a humiliating chapter for the country.
The prime minister also said Pakistan wanted to prevent new conflicts and supported resolving international disputes through the principles of the United Nations and justice. He highlighted Pakistan’s role in efforts to end the Iran-US war and said Field Marshal Asim Munir’s contribution would be remembered.
On the economy, Shehbaz said providing new opportunities for the younger generation remained a government priority. He stressed that economic development must be linked with modern technology to create sustainable opportunities.
The prime minister also highlighted Pakistan’s defence and strategic partnerships with Saudi Arabia, Turkey and other friendly countries. He said the recently signed Mecca Joint Defense Agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey represented a step toward peace and stability in the Muslim world.
On Palestine, Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, a just settlement and lasting peace.
He also praised US President Donald Trump’s role in the Pakistan-India ceasefire, saying Pakistan-US relations would strengthen further in the future.
The prime minister called for national unity beyond political differences, urging citizens to end hatred and promote brotherhood.
He said the nation must demonstrate the same unity during peace that it showed during war and pledged to pursue national progress through honesty, hard work and dedication.
