A Supreme Court lawyer has approached the Islamabad High Court (IHC) against the closure of the Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway (M-1), seeking the reopening of blocked routes for lawyers, litigants and emergency services.
Advocate Mian Shafqat Jan filed the petition after the motorway closure prevented him from reaching the Peshawar High Court (PHC) for a scheduled hearing on September 24.
According to the petition, Jan entered the M-1 from the Islamabad Toll Plaza around 7 a.m. but found the route blocked at the M-1 Attock Bridge. He said officials at the site could not provide confirmation of any written order authorizing the closure.
The petitioner argued that authorities cannot close public routes without a notification, written order or disclosed reasons. He also cited an IHC judgment that recognized citizens’ constitutional rights, including freedom of movement and access to courts.
Jan asked the IHC to declare such closures illegal and unconstitutional and direct authorities to reopen blocked routes for emergency traffic, lawyers, litigants, witnesses, sick people and funeral processions.
The National Highways and Motorway Police said authorities had closed the M-1 between Islamabad Toll Plaza and Chhachh Interchange in both directions. Authorities also closed sections of the M-14 and GT Road at Attock Khurd.
