Huawei and Qualcomm have signed a broad multi-year patent cross-licensing agreement covering technologies including 5G, computing, artificial intelligence, and networking.
The agreement marks the first 5G licensing deal between the two companies.
Qualcomm Will Buy Huawei US Patents
As part of the agreement, Qualcomm will acquire several US patents from Huawei covering developments in computing, AI, networking, and other technologies.
The transaction still requires regulatory approval. Huawei has remained subject to US trade restrictions since 2019, meaning the deal will also require scrutiny from US authorities.
Huawei Patent Deals Could Exceed $6.9 Billion
Huawei and Qualcomm did not disclose the financial terms of the agreement in their joint announcement.
However, Reuters reported that once the deal closes, the total value of Huawei’s patent licensing agreements will exceed $6.9 billion.
Huawei has increased its research and development spending in recent years as it has worked to develop chips and other technologies that it previously sourced from companies such as Qualcomm.
Both Companies Highlight Their Technology Contributions
Huawei Chief Intellectual Property Officer Alan Fan said the company’s long-term investment in research had contributed to advances in mobile communications and other technology areas.
He highlighted Huawei’s work on 4G and 5G standards, including polar-code-based signal transmission technology, and said the agreement recognizes the value of innovation from both companies.
Qualcomm Technology Licensing Executive Vice President and General Manager John Han said Qualcomm’s investments in foundational wireless technologies have supported several generations of mobile communications.
He said the agreement reflects recognition of Qualcomm’s 5G technology and licensing program while also recognizing Huawei’s intellectual property and continued innovation in 5G and other areas.
