The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has opened online registration for the Law Graduate Assessment Test (Law-GAT). Law graduates can apply until midnight on September 27, 2026.
According to HEC’s advertisement, the Education Testing Council (ETC) has tentatively scheduled the test for October 18, 2026.
Passing Law-GAT is mandatory for law graduates seeking eligibility to enrol with the Bar as advocates.
Law-GAT Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree in law or an equivalent qualification from a local or foreign university recognised by HEC/PBC.
Candidates must also meet the Pakistan Bar Council’s (PBC) other rules and requirements for enrolment as advocates.
Test Pattern, Passing Marks and Score Validity
The assessment will consist of multiple-choice questions. Candidates can download the revised Law-GAT syllabus from HEC’s website.
Applicants need at least 50 out of 100 marks to pass. The qualifying score will remain valid for two years. Candidates have a maximum of seven attempts to pass the test.
How to Register Through the HEC ETC Portal
Candidates can apply online through the HEC ETC registration portal. They must complete the required information and submit their application.
ETC will only consider submitted applications. Forms left in saved or incomplete status will not be accepted.
Applicants should check their name, CNIC number, mobile number and other personal details before submission. Any difference between their CNIC and application information will prevent them from taking the test.
Candidates must use their own CNIC. Those who register using a parent’s, sibling’s, relative’s or another person’s CNIC will not be allowed to sit the examination.
Test Fee Payment
Applicants must pay the test fee through 1Link/1Bill Invoice services using the generated consumer number.
After payment, they must click “Verify Online Payment” on their ETC dashboard. The fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.
Candidates facing registration problems can contact the HEC online help service. They must resolve all queries and complaints before the registration deadline, as the system will not handle them after the portal closes.
Roll Number Slips and Test Centres
Roll number slips will be available through the ETC website and applicants’ registered email addresses one week before the test.
ETC will also send email and SMS notifications when the slips are issued. Candidates must provide a valid email address and mobile number in their application.
Mobile numbers transferred from one network to another will not receive SMS alerts. Applicants using these numbers should check their email for updates.
The test will take place in major cities across Pakistan. Candidates can select a centre from the options listed in the application form, but they cannot change it after registration.
ETC may assign a different centre if fewer than 250 applicants register for the selected location.
