Holy Family Hospital in Rawalpindi has started cancer treatment using a cryoablation machine, with 15 patients set to receive the procedure in the first phase.
According to details, 15 probes have been delivered to the hospital for the treatment. Each probe costs Rs. 1.6 million and can only be used for one patient.
Screening of eligible cancer patients has also started at four hospitals in Rawalpindi. Patients suffering from liver, lung, breast, and kidney cancer will be considered for cryoablation, provided their tumors are no larger than 2 centimeters.
Under the procedure, cancerous tumors will be frozen at temperatures as low as minus 180 degrees and then exposed to heat of up to 100 degrees to destroy the affected tissue.
The treatment will be provided completely free of charge, with patients not required to pay any fees.
Cases will be referred from Holy Family Hospital, Benazir Bhutto Hospital, Rawalpindi Teaching Hospital, and PKLI. Before undergoing the procedure, selected patients will also be evaluated in consultation with specialist doctors from NORI Hospital in Islamabad.
In the first phase, 15 patients will undergo cryoablation treatment. Once these procedures are completed, additional probes will be provided to facilitate treatment for more patients.
Patients with tumors larger than 2 centimeters will not be eligible for the procedure.
