Commissioner Rawalpindi Division Salman Ghani has directed authorities to develop a modern water metering and monitoring system to ensure accurate measurement of consumption, prevent wastage and promote transparent distribution.
He issued the directions during a meeting at the Commissioner’s Office to review the proposed supply of water from Dadhocha Dam to Rawalpindi. Director Development Syed Nazarat Ali Shah, MD WASA Azizullah Khan and representatives of the Cantonment Boards, Housing Department, Irrigation Department and other departments attended.
Officials said Rawalpindi currently requires 72 million gallons of water per day (MGD), against an available supply of 51 MGD. WASA currently obtains water from Rawal Dam, Khanpur Dam and tube wells.
After Dadhocha Dam becomes operational, Rawalpindi will receive around 35 MGD, with 15 MGD allocated to WASA and 20 MGD to the Cantonment Boards and DHA. The additional supply will help meet drinking and domestic water needs.
Ghani ordered the installation of high-precision water meters and called for effective monitoring of water consumption. He also directed authorities to use greywater for horticulture and green areas, construct rainwater harvesting tanks and install recharge wells.
The meeting decided to form a technical team to review the proposed transmission, pipeline network, metering and distribution system and submit recommendations.
