Grok Bot Now Offers ‘Free’ Claude Opus 5.5 and Midjourney

Elon Musk says Grok Bot will no longer stick to SpaceXAI’s own models alone. In a post on X on October 7, 2026, he said the assistant will pick the best backend model for each task, including Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5, Midjourney, and Suno.

This means Grok Bot users can technically get free access to Claude Opus 5.5, Midjourney, and other AI models without having to pay for them separately. Of course, you still have to pay for Grok Bot.

“Going forward, @SpaceX will use the best back-end model for any given task, including Claude Opus 5.5, MidJourney, Suno, and other leading APIs. Whatever is most likely to give you the best outcome,” Musk wrote. The post has drawn tens of millions of views.

That shift turns Grok Bot into a routing layer. Heavy reasoning and long-form work can go to Claude Opus 5.5. Image jobs can go to Midjourney. Music and audio can go to Suno. Users do not pick the model themselves. The system chooses based on the request.

What “Free” Access Means Here

What “free” means here is a way to reach those top-tier models through Grok Bot without paying separate Claude or Midjourney API bills. Claude Opus 5.5’s published API rates are about $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens, so routing those calls through the bot is a big cost decision for the platform.

Musk did not spell out pricing, privacy rules for third-party APIs, or which tasks will always use which model. Some users on X asked how conversation data will be handled when requests leave SpaceXAI’s stack. He has not publicly answered those questions yet.

The announcement fits a wider push where big platforms keep the user entry point and outsource some model work. Reports also point to a large SpaceX–Anthropic compute arrangement disclosed in Anthropic’s IPO filings, with SpaceX compute commitments cited in the tens of billions of dollars through 2029. Musk’s public praise for Claude sits alongside that infrastructure relationship.

Grok Bot already runs as an always-on agent with its own computer, tools, and routines. Native X data access is part of that product story: agents can search, read, and monitor activity on X without a separate developer API fee, according to product coverage of the bot.

For now, the clear takeaway is simple. SpaceXAI is willing to call rival models when they are more likely to get the job done, and Claude Opus 5.5, Midjourney, and Suno are on that first list.
