GrapheneOS is preparing to officially support Motorola smartphones starting in 2027, marking a major expansion beyond the Google Pixel devices that currently make up its supported hardware lineup.
Motorola is working directly with the GrapheneOS project on the effort. Future supported phones will still ship with Motorola’s regular Android software, but owners will be able to install GrapheneOS afterward.
2027 Motorola Flagships Coming First
GrapheneOS says its first supported Motorola phone will be a traditional non-folding flagship launching in 2027.
The developers have strongly hinted that it will belong to the same family as the current Motorola Signature, although the exact name of the upcoming device has not been confirmed.
Support will later expand to next-generation versions of the Motorola Razr Fold and Razr Ultra.
The Razr Ultra would be particularly notable because its vertically folding design would represent a new form factor for GrapheneOS. The operating system already supports Google’s larger book-style Pixel foldables.
Current 2026 versions of the Signature, Razr Fold and Razr Ultra will not receive GrapheneOS support. They are only examples of the device families planned for 2027.
Stronger Hardware Security Required
GrapheneOS says Motorola’s current flagship hardware comes close to meeting its requirements but still lacks several features needed for official support.
These include stronger hardware memory tagging (MTE), improved secure-element integration, and other hardware security features expected in Motorola’s 2027 devices.
The upcoming phones will use flagship Snapdragon chipsets, which GrapheneOS says provide stronger CPU and GPU performance along with the isolated hardware components needed for its security architecture.
GrapheneOS says the supported Motorola devices will meet or exceed its official hardware requirements.
Seven Years of Updates
Another major requirement is long-term software support.
The upcoming Motorola devices will receive seven years of proper security and operating-system updates, matching one of GrapheneOS’ most important requirements for modern devices.
Motorola is also doing a large portion of the work required to port GrapheneOS to its hardware.
The company will provide firmware and drivers in the formats GrapheneOS needs, while issues involving those components can be addressed directly with Motorola and Qualcomm.
This deeper cooperation should make it easier for GrapheneOS to support Motorola devices and prepare updates alongside new Android releases.
The move will give GrapheneOS users their first major alternative to Google’s Pixel lineup while bringing official support to both conventional flagship phones and Motorola’s Razr foldables.
