Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has directed authorities to remove legal and operational hurdles in the National Highway Authority’s (NHA) axle load control framework within one week.
Khan chaired a meeting on the axle load control regime and directed officials to provide transporters with clear guidance on vehicle structure and weight limits. He ordered authorities to identify factories that load excessive weight onto trucks and impose fines on them.
He also directed authorities to make it mandatory for freight vehicles to pass through weigh stations. Khan directed officials to fully automate the weigh station system and establish weigh stations on GT Roads, similar to those on motorways.
He also directed authorities to use modern cameras on motorways and artificial intelligence to track vehicles that violate the law. Officials told the meeting that authorities recorded 30,000 axle load violations during the past six months.
Khan also decided to personally visit 10 locations on motorways to review the implementation of the axle load regime. Officials said authorities would soon complete a modern model weigh station in Sangjani that meets international standards.
