Govt to Rebrand NCCIA as Cyber Police

The government is considering a major restructuring of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), including a proposal to rename it as Cyber Police and operate it under a hybrid model with the police department.

According to media reports, the proposals submitted to the Ministry of Interior include establishing Cyber Police stations in every district. These stations would be headed by Station House Officers (SHOs) instead of NCCIA deputy directors.

SP- and DSP-rank officers are proposed for larger districts, while smaller districts would have Cyber Police stations supervised by DSP-rank officers. In Lahore, a Cyber Police station has been proposed for every police division, with one SSP and two SPs overseeing the setup.

Under the proposed structure, existing NCCIA buildings would be converted into Cyber Police stations. The plan also calls for integrating cybercrime investigations with the district police system and creating a joint mechanism between the police and Cyber Police.

The proposals have reportedly been forwarded to the Ministry of Interior by the NCCIA Director General. The ministry will make the final decision on the proposed restructuring and name change.

The NCCIA currently operates under the Ministry of Interior and Narcotics Control and is responsible for investigating and prosecuting cybercrime, including online fraud, harassment, and data breaches.
