The government has removed a key regulatory requirement for small rooftop solar installations by allowing electricity distribution companies (Discos) to directly approve grid connected solar systems of up to 25 kilowatts, eliminating the need for prior approval from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra).
The regulator amended the Solar Regulations 2026 and issued a notification authorizing distribution companies to approve eligible rooftop solar installations, streamlining the approval process for households and small businesses.
Under the revised rules, consumers installing solar systems with a generation capacity of up to 25 kW will no longer need to obtain separate approval from Nepra.
Instead, applications will be submitted directly to the relevant Disco for processing.
The change is expected to speed up the adoption of rooftop solar by reducing regulatory delays and simplifying the grid connection process for small consumers.
