The federal government’s spending on fuel increased by around 190 percent over five years, rising from Rs. 7.52 billion in fiscal year 2020-21 to Rs. 21.77 billion in 2024-25.
According to a document presented before Parliament, the increase in fuel expenditure was primarily driven by rising fuel prices.
Fuel spending by federal ministries, departments and attached institutions stood at Rs. 7.52 billion in FY2020-21. It increased to Rs. 8.35 billion in FY2021-22 and then almost doubled to Rs. 15.66 billion in FY2022-23.
The expenditure remained largely unchanged at Rs. 15.67 billion in FY2023-24 before rising to Rs. 21.77 billion in FY2024-25.
The government, in its response submitted to Parliament, attributed the rise in fuel expenditure to higher prices rather than providing a separate explanation for increased consumption.
