Petroleum dealers have announced an indefinite nationwide strike from August 15 after talks with the government failed to resolve their concerns over the daily adjustment of petroleum product prices.
Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association Chairman Malik Khuda Baksh said the government refused to change the daily fuel price adjustment system during negotiations. The government, however, assured dealers that it would consider increasing their margin by Rs. 1.34, subject to approval by the federal cabinet.
The dealers rejected the outcome of the talks and decided to proceed with the strike from Saturday morning, according to the association.
The development comes after petrol dealers had earlier given the government a 72 hour deadline to address their demands and had warned of a nationwide shutdown.
The dealers have been seeking changes to the mechanism used to determine fuel prices, particularly after the government moved toward more frequent adjustments in petroleum prices.
Meanwhile, the nationwide goods transport strike also continued for a sixth day after talks between transporters and the federal and Sindh governments failed to produce an agreement.
All Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance President Malik Shahzad Awan said transporters would continue their strike until their demands were accepted and formally notified. He urged transporters to remain peaceful and avoid blocking roads.
