Govt Considers 3-Day Lockdown as Petrol Price Nears Rs. 400 Per Liter

The federal government is considering emergency measures to reduce petrol consumption as the global situation worsens due to the ongoing US-Iran conflict, according to sources.

Officials are reviewing several options to ensure uninterrupted petroleum supplies and manage potential energy pressures in the country.

Sources said the government is considering a “smart petroleum lockdown” under which citizens may get three days off and work for four days a week.

Under the proposal, Friday, Saturday and Sunday could be declared as restricted movement days to reduce unnecessary travel and save fuel.

The proposal aims to lower petroleum consumption and ensure fuel conservation at the national level, sources added.

However, normal business and government activities would continue for four days a week under the proposed plan.

The government is also reviewing different options to limit unnecessary movement on weekends and reduce demand for petroleum products.

Sources said authorities are consulting on the smart lockdown strategy to deal with possible energy shortages caused by changing global conditions.

The government is also assessing the potential impact of the plan on public activities, businesses and government operations.

A final report on the proposed smart petroleum lockdown will be presented to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, sources said.

The prime minister is expected to make an important announcement after reviewing the recommendations.

Before taking a final decision, the government will seek suggestions from relevant ministries and departments.

Sources said the government’s focus remains on reducing petrol consumption, limiting unnecessary travel and controlling energy usage.

The final duration, implementation method and scope of the smart petroleum lockdown will be decided after approval from the prime minister.
