Govt Celebrates Record Rs. 1.2 Trillion Early Debt Repayment

Pakistan has made its largest single early debt repayment to date, retiring Rs. 1.2 trillion ahead of maturity, according to Khurram Shehzad, Advisor to the Finance Minister.

Shehzad said the latest repayment to the State Bank of Pakistan takes the government’s cumulative early retirement of domestic debt to around Rs. 5.92 trillion. The August 2026 repayment is the largest single tranche so far, surpassing the previous record of Rs. 1.133 trillion retired in August 2025.#

The early repayment program began in October 2024 with Rs. 826 billion, followed by Rs. 200 billion in November 2024 and Rs. 273 billion in March 2025. The government then repaid Rs. 500 billion in June 2025 and Rs. 1.133 trillion in August 2025.

Further early repayments included Rs. 122 billion in November 2025, Rs. 494 billion in December 2025, Rs. 300 billion in January 2026, Rs. 595 billion in April 2026 and Rs. 279 billion in May 2026. The latest Rs. 1.2 trillion repayment brings the total to about Rs. 5.92 trillion.

Shehzad said the government retired around Rs. 1.8 trillion ahead of maturity in fiscal 2025 and Rs. 2.9 trillion in fiscal 2026, with another Rs. 1.2 trillion already retired in fiscal 2027. He said the increase reflects a shift toward more active management of the government’s debt obligations.

According to the advisor, retiring debt before maturity is aimed at reducing refinancing and rollover risks, lowering future debt servicing pressure and strengthening the government’s overall debt position. He said the approach would also create greater fiscal space for the economy.

Shehzad said Pakistan was increasingly moving beyond simply managing debt maturities toward actively strengthening its sovereign balance sheet.
