Google Launches Playground to Let Anyone Build Games With AI

Google has launched Playground, a new browser-based platform that lets users create custom games using AI prompts without needing coding experience.

The experimental gaming platform is available starting today in the US for users aged 18 and older.

Games Can Be Built Through Conversation

Playground uses a conversational interface that lets users describe the game they want to build in natural language.

Users can start from a blank canvas, remix starter prompts, or use guided support to develop an idea.

They can also ask the system to change game physics, rewrite rules, customize characters, or modify environments while testing the game immediately.

Google says users remain in control of the creative direction throughout the process.

Games Can Be Shared and Published

Once a game is complete, users can share it through a link or publish it to the Playground Explore gallery.

Selected game genres will also support multiplayer and in-game leaderboards.

Google says the Explore gallery will surface games based on factors including ratings, play activity, and whether they are fresh, creative, and fun.

Powered by Gemini, Nano Banana and Lyria

Playground is free to use.

Users with a Google One subscription will receive higher weekly token limits depending on their plan.

Google says the platform uses its existing foundation models, including Gemini, Nano Banana, and Lyria, combined with a custom system refined using internally developed games and evaluations.

Unity Spark Is Also Coming

Google and Unity also announced Unity Spark, a separate AI-powered game creation experience designed to be closer to a professional game development engine.

Unity Spark will allow multiple people to create games together at the same time. Games made with Unity Spark will also be shareable on Playground.

A closed beta for Unity Spark is scheduled to begin later this year, while interested users can join the waitlist starting today.

AI Game Creation Is Becoming More Competitive

Google’s announcement follows similar moves from Meta and Roblox.

Meta recently announced AI game creation tools for its Horizon platform, with games built using those tools potentially being recommended across Facebook and Instagram.

Roblox has also started testing a Build feature that lets users create games with AI on their phones. The feature is currently in public alpha testing in selected countries.
