Gilgit-Baltistan has launched two major policy initiatives focused on climate change and agriculture with support from the European Union (EU).
EU Ambassador to Pakistan Raimundas Karoblis launched the region’s first GB Carbon Strategy and Action Plan along with the proposed Agriculture Policy and Action Plan 2027–2036.
Both plans were prepared for the Gilgit-Baltistan government under an EU-supported policy project aimed at tackling climate change, protecting the environment, and promoting sustainable economic development in the region.
The Carbon Strategy and Action Plan was formally launched during a ceremony at the Gilgit Secretariat Complex.
Speaking at the event, Karoblis said addressing climate change, protecting the environment, and promoting sustainable economic development in Gilgit-Baltistan are among the EU’s key priorities.
He said the EU remains committed to helping the region deal with the growing effects of climate change and will further expand its technical and financial cooperation with the Gilgit-Baltistan government following the completion of the policy formulation phase.
“Following the successful completion of this important phase of policy formulation, the EU will further expand its technical and financial cooperation with the GB government to support the implementation of this strategy,” the ambassador said.
During the ceremony, Ashab Ullah Baig, Team Leader and Carbon Expert of the EU Policy Support Project to the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan, also briefed participants on the key features and strategic priorities of the Carbon Strategy and Action Plan.
