Field Marshal Asim Munir in Iran Next Week to Revive US Peace Talks

Field Marshal Asim Munir will visit Tehran on Monday to revive peace talks with US, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Sunday.

Two Pakistani government sources also told Reuters about the visit. Pakistan has taken on a mediation role in ending the war that began after US and Israeli strikes on Iran in February.

The field marshal’s discussions in Tehran will cover the peace process under an Islamabad memorandum of understanding, Donald Trump’s threats, and the Pakistan-Turkey-Saudi Arabia agreement.

The visit comes as tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high. Trump has warned countries against providing Iran with “any type of lifeline” as he seeks to increase economic pressure on Tehran.

Iran has warned that tougher economic restrictions could trigger a military response.

Meanwhile, shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has been severely disrupted.

Iran has threatened to strike unauthorized oil tankers attempting to pass through the Strait.

The disruption has turned the Iran-US confrontation into a bigger threat to international energy markets and shipping.
