FBR Gives Chocolate and Candy Makers Relief From Price Printing Rule

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has relaxed retail price and sales tax printing requirements for chocolates, candies, toffees, and similar confectionery products, citing practical difficulties in printing the information on small individual wrappers.

In a Sales Tax General Order (STGO) issued on Wednesday, the FBR said manufacturers and importers will no longer be required to print the retail price and sales tax amount on each individual confectionery item where the wrapper does not provide sufficient printable space.

Instead, the FBR has allowed the required information to be printed or embossed on packages containing up to 100 pieces, provided the maximum retail price of each item does not exceed Rs. 5 and all other provisions of the Sales Tax Act, 1990, and Sales Tax General Order No. 08 of 2026 are met.

The clarification follows representations from manufacturers and importers, who told the tax authority that complying with the earlier requirement was not practical because of the limited printable surface on small confectionery wrappers.

The FBR said the printed sales tax information on the outer package must remain clear, legible, conspicuous, and indelible, while complying with the mandatory printing specifications prescribed under the existing sales tax rules.
