The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has announced an extension for the filing of income tax returns for the tax year 2026, moving the deadline from September 30 to October 15, 2026.
The official notification was released a short while ago.
“The date of filing of Income Tax Return for Tax Year 2026, for persons who are required to file their returns by September 30th, 2026, is hereby extended up to October 15th, 2026, in view of the requests from various trade bodies and the tax bar associations,” FBR said in its extension statement.
This comes after tax professionals and business groups urged FBR to extend the deadline due to ongoing issues with the online filing system and the need for more time to complete documentation.
Taxpayers faced slowdowns, glitches, bugs and problems while submitting returns. The IRIS portal has time and again failed to properly accept returns in the past few weeks for many individuals.
So far, FBR received 5.8 million tax returns by September 30, 2026, compared with 3.8 million returns by September 30, 2025. Despite receiving more returns, FBR collected around Rs. 8 billion less in tax from returns compared to last year.
FBR has achieved its first-quarter tax collection target of Rs. 3,053 billion and also met its September 2026 target of Rs. 1,330 billion.
Tax collections are expected to reach around Rs. 3,072 billion during July-September 2026.
