FBR Chairman’s Hilal-e-Imtiaz Draws Heavy Criticism

Senators have strongly criticised the nomination of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairman Rashid Langrial and other FBR officials for the Hilal-i-Imtiaz award.

During a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Interior on Monday, Senator Saifullah Abro said corruption worth Rs. 1,100 billion had been uncovered under the FBR chairman’s watch, yet four FBR officials had been nominated for the civil award.

The senator said lawmakers should protest if officials were being considered for awards despite such a huge corruption case. He also alleged that FBR officials were involved in the alleged fraud alongside the industries concerned.

Senator Nasima Ehsan took a sarcastic view of the nominations, saying that “a lot of hard work” was required to commit corruption on such a large scale, which was why the officials were being considered for the award.

The senators also questioned FBR’s response to notices issued to companies in connection with the alleged Rs. 1,100 billion fraud.
