FBR Can Now Detect Sales Tax Errors Online

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has introduced a new online system to check sales tax returns and alert taxpayers about errors or discrepancies before legal action is taken.

Under the new procedure issued on September 25, the FBR’s computerized system can review sales tax returns and other available data to identify possible factual or legal mistakes.

Taxpayers can receive an online intimation through IRIS, explaining the issue and giving them a chance to clarify it, correct the error or take other corrective action.

Taxpayers will get at least seven days to respond.

If no response is received, the FBR will issue a reminder and provide another period of at least seven days.

The new system will record detected discrepancies, notices issued and taxpayer responses on the FBR’s system dashboard.

The relevant Inland Revenue officer will then review the taxpayer’s response and take further action where required under the Sales Tax Act, 1990 and related rules.

The procedure applies to automated scrutiny, analysis and cross-checking of sales tax returns and other taxpayer data through the FBR’s computerized system.
