Sindh Minister for Local Government Syed Nasir Hussain Shah chaired a high-level meeting to review the progress and performance of the Lyari Transformation Project.
The meeting was attended by MNA Nabil Gabol, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, Additional Chief Secretary Local Government Wasim Shamshad, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s personal secretary Junaid Ahmed Jaidi, Sindh Assembly members Yousuf Baloch and Shazia Karim Sanghar, PPP District South President Javed Nagori, town chairmen, and senior officials of the concerned departments.
The meeting reviewed the ongoing development works under the project, along with water supply and sewerage systems, illegal constructions, illegal water and sewerage connections, and other hurdles affecting the pace of work.
Speaking at the meeting, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah said Phase-I of the Lyari Transformation Project would be completed by August 2027.
He directed all departments and institutions concerned to adopt a coordinated strategy and accelerate work through mutual consultation.
The minister ordered immediate removal of all hurdles delaying the project and said issues affecting development work should be resolved on a priority basis.
He also directed that a joint strategy be developed with the relevant institutions to address illegal water supply and sewerage connections in Lyari, and said strict action should be taken against illegal constructions and unauthorised connections.
Syed Nasir Hussain Shah said the project was launched on the special directives of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who wants Lyari developed as a model area.
He said Lyari would be developed as a role-model town of Sindh in line with those directives.
During the meeting, MNA Nabil Gabol and Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab shared their concerns and suggestions and briefed the meeting on the issues being faced in implementation.
Mayor Murtaza Wahab said problems related to water and sewerage lines would be resolved so that development work is not delayed.
The local government minister said progress on the project would be reviewed regularly and all stakeholders would meet every 15 days to assess progress, identify hurdles and ensure timely solutions.
He also directed that officers with a good reputation be posted in Lyari Town and said officers found responsible for negligence or delay should be removed immediately.
On the complaints of elected representatives, he ordered the suspension of the Assistant Director of the Sindh Building Control Authority in Lyari.
The minister said negligence and unnecessary delay in development projects of public importance would not be tolerated.
He directed all concerned departments to maintain effective coordination, fulfil their responsibilities and resolve administrative and technical issues through mutual consultation. He said improving basic infrastructure, water supply, sewerage systems and civic facilities in Lyari remained among the key goals of the project, which would be completed within the stipulated timeframe.
