Pakistan’s National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has raised electricity costs by up to about Rs. 2.58 per unit for September, with consumers facing an additional burden of around Rs. 46 billion.
The increase includes a Rs. 2.06 per unit fuel cost adjustment for electricity consumed in July and a further Rs. 0.52 per unit quarterly adjustment that will be recovered from consumers from September through November.
The July fuel adjustment will add about Rs. 33 billion to consumer bills, mainly because of higher LNG purchases from the spot market. The quarterly adjustment will add another Rs. 12.7 billion.
Under Nepra’s notification, the Rs. 2.0581 per unit fuel adjustment will apply to K-Electric and XWDISCO consumers, excluding lifeline consumers, electric vehicle charging stations and prepaid electricity users.
The 52 paisa quarterly adjustment will also be charged to most consumers for three months. NEPRA said the adjustment reflects changes in capacity charges, variable operation and maintenance costs, system usage charges, market operator fees, transmission and distribution losses, and other costs.
