Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in Murree recalled that the US dollar stood at around Rs. 100 during his tenure as prime minister, and expressed shock at how the exchange rate climbed so sharply afterward.
Addressing a meeting in Murree, he said the government could no longer afford to disappoint voters and warned that failure to deliver would erode public confidence. He called for better roads and hospitals, more employment opportunities, promotion of tourism, laptops and scholarships for students, and the introduction of a Kisan Card in Azad Kashmir.
Nawaz also said his party would transform Azad Kashmir like today’s Punjab and ensure greater funding.
Nawaz congratulated those who won the Azad Kashmir elections and praised candidates who lost for their efforts. He said complaints had reached him about the conduct of some political actors and expressed disappointment, particularly because his coalition partners had been in power in the region.
He stressed that political differences should not turn into personal hostility and said the traditionally peaceful political environment of Azad Kashmir should be protected.
Nawaz also praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s efforts to improve Pakistan’s economic situation.
Recalling his previous tenure, he said the dollar was around Rs. 100 when he was prime minister and questioned how far the exchange rate had moved since then. He also called for a helicopter for the Azad Kashmir government given the region’s mountainous terrain.
