DAP Shortfall Looms for Rabi Season Despite Healthy Urea Stocks

The Ministry of National Food Security and Research has expressed satisfaction with Pakistan’s overall fertilizer supply situation as the country prepares for the Rabi 2026 to 2027 cropping season. The government has reviewed fertilizer stocks, prices, distribution arrangements, and demand to ensure farmers have access to essential supplies.

National Food Security Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain chaired a Fertilizer Review Committee meeting on Tuesday to assess availability and supply requirements for the ongoing Rabi season. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining sufficient stocks, preventing market exploitation, and supporting farmers throughout the planting season.

Official estimates put urea consumption at 3.596 million tonnes during Rabi 2026 to 2027, based on provincial demand, compared with 3.563 million tonnes in the previous season.

Urea Stocks Exceed Demand, but DAP Supply Falls Short

Total urea availability is projected at 3.95 million tonnes, comprising 765,000 tonnes in opening stocks and 3.185 million tonnes of domestic production.

Expected urea offtake stands at approximately 3.596 million tonnes, leaving projected availability above anticipated demand. The figures indicate that estimated urea supplies are sufficient to cover expected consumption during the season.

Diammonium phosphate (DAP) offtake is projected at 838,000 tonnes, based on the average of the past five years. This represents an increase of 0.4 percent from Rabi 2025 to 2026. However, total DAP availability is estimated at 766,000 tonnes, below expected offtake by 72,000 tonnes.

Overall fertilizer offtake is expected to increase by 0.8 percent compared with the previous Rabi season. The committee reviewed supply requirements and distribution arrangements as the government seeks to maintain availability and meet farmers’ needs.
