Controversial Islamabad Building to Become 5-Star Hotel
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has announced plans to convert Islamabad’s controversial One Constitution Avenue project into a five-star hotel within the next few months, restoring the building to its originally approved purpose.
The announcement followed the federal cabinet’s approval of a joint investigation team (JIT) report on the project. Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad on Wednesday, Naqvi said the government would approach a major international hotel chain to operate the property.
“We will make every effort to convert this building into a five-star hotel within the next few months, which was its original purpose,” the interior minister said.
He highlighted Islamabad’s shortage of hotel facilities and expressed hope that the government would finalize an agreement with an international hotel chain soon.
Naqvi said the cabinet’s approval of the JIT findings had cleared the way for the government to take legal possession of the property. He explained that the Capital Development Authority (CDA) already held possession of the building in its official records, but the cabinet’s decision had provided the necessary legal basis.
The minister said the CDA’s member administration would immediately take responsibility for the building’s affairs, adding that the government wanted to make the hotel operational as soon as possible. He also assured that the government would compensate individuals entitled to payments under the JIT’s recommendations.
