Chinese chipmaker ChangXin Memory Technologies, better known as CXMT, became the world’s fastest-growing DRAM manufacturer during the second quarter of 2026, according to the latest figures from Counterpoint Research.
CXMT’s DRAM revenue jumped 716% compared with the same period last year. Strong demand from customers in China and an expansion in production capacity drove the increase. Taiwan’s Nanya Technology followed with revenue growth of 690%.
Samsung Returns to the Top
Samsung regained its position as the world’s largest DRAM supplier, accounting for 39% of industry revenue during the quarter.
SK Hynix ranked second with a 26% share, down 13 percentage points from the previous year. However, its revenue still increased by 214% during the same period.
Micron followed closely with a 25% market share, leaving it only one percentage point behind SK Hynix. DRAM has become increasingly important to the AI industry because manufacturers stack multiple memory layers to create the high-bandwidth memory used alongside advanced AI processors.
CXMT Expands After Record IPO
Like contract chipmaker SMIC, CXMT has become a central part of China’s effort to reduce its dependence on foreign semiconductor technology.
The company is also reportedly approaching the production stage for LPDDR6, an advanced generation of low-power memory designed for smartphones and other mobile devices. Reports claim its LPDDR6 development has reached the research and verification stage.
CXMT completed an $8.6 billion stock market listing in July and is now pursuing an aggressive capacity expansion. The company is considering a second memory-chip factory in Beijing, alongside additional projects in Shanghai and Hefei.
Those projects could eventually more than double its production capacity to over 600,000 wafers per month.
Apple has also reportedly explored buying memory chips from CXMT as rising prices and limited global supplies increase pressure on production costs.
Counterpoint Research Vice President Neil Shah said CXMT’s growth could reshape the global memory industry. He argued that the main question is no longer whether CXMT can enter the group currently dominated by Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron, but when it will achieve that position.
