The Capital Development Authority has set a target of planting more than 200,000 trees during its ongoing monsoon plantation campaign in Islamabad.
Officials said the campaign has begun in Shakarparian, where CDA Chairman Sohail Ashraf and Environment Member Abdullah Khurram Niazi planted saplings on Tuesday.
The authority said its partners also planted trees in the area as part of the drive.
A CDA officer said the tentative target for urban plantation and Margalla Hills National Park stands at 210,725 trees, along with 250,000 seed balls and 1.4 million seeds.
He said the campaign will include indigenous species such as chir pine, amaltas, willow, kachnar, jacaranda, pilkan, sukh chain, bottel brush, golden duranta, cassia galaca, apricot, date palm, bougainvillea and others.
The officer added that nine partner companies are supporting the drive under corporate social responsibility and have donated 57,250 plants.
The Clean and Green Islamabad Movement also organized a plantation drive at Parade Ground, where civic and business leaders joined the effort.
The CDA said the campaign aims to expand Islamabad’s green cover, promote environmental sustainability and encourage citizens to take part in tree planting for a cleaner city.
Last year, the authority faced criticism over tree cutting in Shakarparian and other areas, but it has now shifted focus to large-scale plantation.
