You Can Now Get a University Degree in Being an Influencer

Arizona State University has launched a bachelor’s degree focused on content creation and digital influencing, with students expected to build a real social media account and demonstrate audience growth during the program.

The Bachelor of Arts in Content Creation is offered through ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and appears in the university’s 2026-2027 catalog. The program requires at least 120 credit hours.

ASU’s University Senate approved the degree in March 2026. The proposal said graduates would be prepared to work independently as influencers and content creators across livestreaming, podcasting, videography, writing, graphics and other emerging media.

Students Will Have to Grow a Real Audience

The degree covers video and podcast production, personal branding, social media strategy, audience analytics and multimedia storytelling.

For a final project, students will choose a platform such as TikTok, create a content and growth strategy, publish real content and try to grow an actual following during the semester.

Jessica Pucci, senior associate dean at the Cronkite School, told AZFamily that students are expected to finish with measurable audience growth, real followers and an established platform.

The program is designed to go beyond simply teaching students how to record and upload videos. It also focuses on measuring performance, testing strategies and understanding how audiences respond to different types of content.

Courses Include ‘How to Become an Influencer’

The curriculum includes courses such as How to Become an Influencer, On-Camera Presence, Introduction to Editing, Videography, Podcasting and Audio Storytelling, Social Media Foundations, and The Digital Audience.

Students will also study more traditional subjects including media law, mass communication ethics, media writing and information gathering. General education requirements, including math and history-related coursework, remain part of the degree.

Students Can Build Brands in Los Angeles

ASU says the program includes hands-on opportunities in Phoenix and Los Angeles.

Students can take part in the Los Angeles Content Creation Studio, along with brand projects, media internships and other practical experiences. The university says the program can lead to careers in digital influencing, podcasting, content production, digital marketing, ocial media, brand storytelling, videography and photography.

The degree reflects the growing effort by universities to treat content creation as a professional career requiring skills in production, audience development, business and media strategy.
