Pakistan has saved nearly $12 billion through solar energy adoption and faster expansion of battery storage can help support the national grid, Senator Sherry Rehman said on Tuesday.
Addressing the Solar Storage Flexibility Conference in Islamabad, the senator said one in every five households now uses solar systems. She said Pakistan could further improve energy security by expanding battery storage, smart grids and distributed energy resources, which could help manage demand and reduce pressure on the national grid.
The senator noted that around $6.3 billion in additional savings could be achieved this year through solar energy and further expansion into affordable financing and modern grid infrastructure was needed to sustain the solar transition.
She said Pakistan’s electricity challenge was not only linked to generation capacity but also required reforms in grid management and the resolution of capacity payment issues.
Rehman also mentioned the importance of expanding access to renewable energy for households and small businesses and how battery storage and distributed energy solutions should become key priorities for future energy planning.
She added that Pakistan’s solar transition had largely been driven by market demand and private investment and greater financing would help accelerate the adoption of clean energy.
