Recipients may qualify for additional financial support in certain circumstances. Macquarie allows eligible students to receive supplementary minor awards and approved income from part-time work.
Students may also receive stipend top-up funding worth up to 100% of the main stipend, subject to scholarship conditions.
Separate funding may support research costs such as fieldwork, equipment, and other approved expenses that the main scholarship does not cover.
Who Can Apply for the Scholarship
Applicants must be onshore in Australia when they submit their application and must intend to live in Sydney throughout their research candidature.
Candidates need to start the Master of Research full-time in January 2027. They must also meet Macquarie University’s academic and English-language requirements for admission to the MRes.
This onshore condition is particularly important for international applicants. Pakistani and other overseas students can apply only if they are already in Australia and meet the applicable visa and admission requirements.
Research Areas Available at Macquarie University
The Master of Research covers a broad range of academic areas. Students can pursue research in fields such as arts and social sciences, business, criminology, education, engineering, health, information technology, language and linguistics, law, media, medicine, and psychological science.
Current Macquarie postgraduate coursework students who expect to complete their degree in Session 2, 2026 are also encouraged to apply if they meet the scholarship conditions.
How Macquarie University Will Select Candidates
Macquarie University will award the scholarship through a competitive ranking process. For eligible applicants, the university generally uses the Weighted Average Mark (WAM) to determine academic ranking.
Candidates who completed their qualification before 2020 or earned their degree from another university may instead be ranked using their Grade Point Average (GPA).
Macquarie will assess overseas qualifications using Australian Government guidelines to determine how they compare with qualifications under the Australian Qualifications Framework.
Supervisor Approval Is Important
Applicants need confirmation of supervision from an eligible Macquarie University researcher. This requirement is compulsory for candidates applying through the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences.
For applicants in other faculties, securing supervision is strongly encouraged and may support the research application process.
