Apple is reportedly preparing to launch a new iPad mini later this month, and the compact tablet could receive one of its biggest upgrades in years: an OLED display.
The launch is expected to take place during Apple’s second October event, which is also tipped to focus on new Macs. Apple’s first October event is expected to introduce the HomeView smart home hub alongside other smart home products.
First iPad Mini With OLED
The upcoming iPad mini will reportedly become the first model in the series to use an OLED panel.
Apple will continue using LCD panels across some of its other iPads, however. The company refreshed the iPad Air lineup earlier this year with 60Hz IPS LCDs.
The current iPad mini dates back to 2024 and was largely a performance-focused update.
Apple replaced the A15 chip with the A17 Pro and increased RAM from 4GB to 8GB, allowing the tablet to support Apple Intelligence in supported markets.
Apart from those upgrades, the overall hardware remained largely similar to the 2021 model.
Could Be Apple’s Final iPad Launch of 2026
The new iPad mini is expected to be Apple’s last iPad refresh of 2026.
That would mean the rumored next-generation entry-level iPad will not arrive until 2027.
The current standard iPad launched in 2025 with a newer processor, 6GB of RAM, and a slightly larger 11-inch IPS LCD, replacing the previous 10.9-inch panel.
However, its hardware was not sufficient to support Apple Intelligence.
Entry-Level iPad Could Get A19 and 8GB RAM
The next standard iPad is expected to receive a much larger performance upgrade.
Leaked code reportedly points to an Apple A19 chipset paired with 8GB of RAM, which should make the tablet compatible with Apple Intelligence, Siri AI, and other AI features. Connectivity upgrades are also expected.
Apple’s N1 networking chip could bring Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth and Thread support, while a cellular version is expected to use the company’s C1X modem for sub-6GHz 5G connectivity.
More iPad and Mac Upgrades Expected in 2027
Apple is also expected to refresh its iPad Pro lineup in 2027, as the current models date back to 2025.
Other products reportedly planned for next year include new MacBook Air models, MacBook Neo devices, iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e.
The iPad Air could also receive another update, which would mark its fourth consecutive annual refresh if Apple continues its recent upgrade cycle.
