Google has officially introduced Tap to Share, a new Quick Share feature that allows supported Android phones to exchange contacts, photos, videos, and other content simply by bringing the devices together. This is essentially Android’s answer to iPhone’s NameDrop feature from three years ago.
The feature is initially available on Pixel phones starting with the Pixel 6. Google is also bringing support to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Flip8, with more Android devices expected to gain the feature by the end of 2026.
Contact Sharing Gets Much Easier
To exchange contact details, users only need to remain on their home screen and bring two compatible Android phones close together.
The phones can then perform an instant two-way exchange of contact information. Users can decide which fields from their contact card they want to share or configure the feature to only receive the other person’s contact details.
Photos and Videos Work Too
Tap to Share can also transfer photos and videos.
Users first select the content they want to send and open the phone’s Share Sheet. Bringing the two supported devices together then initiates the transfer through Quick Share. Google says the feature can also be used for other types of content.
Users Can Turn It Off
Tap to Share is part of Google’s existing Quick Share system, which handles nearby file transfers between supported devices.
Users who do not want the new tap-based functionality can disable it by going to Settings > Google > Quick Share > Tap to Share.
