Android Now Owns Every Three in Four Smartphones Shipped Worldwide

Android accounted for 75% of global smartphone shipments in Q2 2026, strengthening its position as the world’s dominant mobile operating system, according to Counterpoint Research.

The figure increased from 73% in Q1, while Apple’s iOS slipped from 22% to 20%. Huawei’s HarmonyOS remained in third place globally with an unchanged 5% share.

These figures represent smartphones shipped between April and June rather than the share of Android, iOS and HarmonyOS devices currently in use.

Android and iOS Almost Even in the US

The US remains one of the closest major markets for Android and iOS.

Apple’s iOS held a narrow lead with 51% of smartphone shipments, compared with 49% for Android.

The gap has narrowed significantly since Q4 2025, when iOS reached a massive 69% share of US smartphone shipments.

HarmonyOS Beats iOS in China

China presents a very different picture.

Android remained the country’s largest smartphone operating system with a 58% share, although this was down significantly from 63% in Q1.

Huawei’s HarmonyOS climbed from 19% to 24%, putting it firmly in second place.

Apple’s iOS remained third despite increasing slightly from 17% to 18%.

This means HarmonyOS now holds a six-percentage-point lead over iOS in China’s smartphone shipment market.

Android Controls 91% of India’s Market

Android’s strongest position among the major markets covered by the report was in India.

Android-powered smartphones accounted for a massive 91% of shipments, up from 90% during the previous quarter.

Apple’s iOS slipped from 10% to just 9%, leaving an 82-percentage-point gap between the two platforms.

Global Smartphone Shipments Fall

The operating-system figures come as the wider smartphone industry faces a significant slowdown.

Counterpoint Research said global smartphone shipments fell 11% year-on-year during Q2 2026, reaching their lowest second-quarter level since 2013.

Entry-level and mid-range smartphones were among the hardest-hit categories, particularly in emerging markets.

Despite the shrinking overall market, Android increased its global shipment share during the quarter, while iOS lost two percentage points and HarmonyOS remained steady.
