Resident Evil 2’s remake has become the highest-selling game in Capcom’s survival horror series, ending Resident Evil 5’s long reign at the top.
Capcom’s latest sales figures show that the 2019 remake has sold 19.75 million copies. That puts it ahead of Resident Evil 5, which had reached a combined total of 19.01 million sales across its releases.
Older Resident Evil Games Continue Selling
Resident Evil 5 remained the franchise’s biggest seller for years, reflecting the huge anticipation surrounding its original 2009 launch. The game followed the highly praised Resident Evil 4, although it did not receive the same level of critical acclaim.
The new figures also show the strength of Capcom’s back catalogue. Resident Evil 2 launched more than seven years ago but continues to attract buyers.
Its sales may also have benefited from the release of other games featuring Leon S. Kennedy, including the Resident Evil 4 remake and Resident Evil Requiem.
Resident Evil 4’s remake has now sold 16.04 million copies, while Resident Evil Requiem has reached 8.06 million. Both remain strong sellers and could eventually challenge Resident Evil 2’s record if demand continues. Capcom has also confirmed plans for additional Resident Evil Requiem content.
RE Franchise Reaches 213 Million Sales
Total sales across the Resident Evil franchise have now reached 213 million copies. This puts the series slightly ahead of Final Fantasy’s previously reported total of 212 million, although Square Enix has not yet updated that figure for the latest financial quarter.
Other Capcom releases also continue to perform strongly. Pragmata has sold 2.51 million copies, while Monster Hunter: World has reached 30.45 million when sales of the Iceborne Master Edition are included.
The next major Resident Evil release outside gaming is Zach Cregger’s new movie, scheduled to reach cinemas on September 18, 2026. Capcom will then release Resident Evil Veronica, a remake of Resident Evil Code: Veronica, sometime in 2027.
