US President Donald Trump a short while ago claimed that the United States has suspended a planned military attack on Iran after Tehran and several Middle Eastern countries requested time to finalize a potential agreement.
In a statement, Trump said US forces were prepared for military action against Iran with a level of strength “not seen since World War II.” He asserted that Iran had asked Washington to delay any strike because the broad outlines of a deal had been agreed upon.
Trump said the proposed agreement would include the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat.
Trump said he agreed to cancel the planned attack, for now, to allow negotiations to move forward, adding that Israel supports the decision as long as a deal can be reached quickly.
The claims have not been independently verified, and Iranian authorities did not immediately confirm Trump’s statements.
