South American Country Introduces New Work Permit Card for Foreign Workers

Guyana has introduced a new Work Permit Card for foreign nationals, giving approved workers a separate document to prove their legal immigration status and permission to work in the country.

The card is now issued in addition to the existing work permit endorsement placed in a foreign worker’s passport, according to immigration firm Fragomen.

Foreign nationals receive both documents after their work permit has been approved and they have completed biometric registration.

Card Shows Work Authorization Period

Both the new Work Permit Card and the passport endorsement show how long the holder is authorized to work in Guyana.

The card serves as evidence of the worker’s lawful immigration status and employment authorization, just like the passport endorsement.

However, it gives foreign workers a more convenient way to prove their status without having to routinely carry their passports.

Guyana Has Been Changing Its Work Permit Process

The new card follows other recent changes to Guyana’s work authorization system.

Fragomen reported in January that Guyana had shortened the validity of certain work authorization approvals to three months and was issuing entry and work permit approvals at the same time, reducing the time foreign nationals have to enter the country and complete post-arrival requirements.

Guyana generally requires foreign nationals coming to the country for employment to obtain a work permit sponsored by a Guyanese company or a foreign company registered in Guyana. Fragomen says work permits are usually granted for two years and can be extended.

The new Work Permit Card does not replace the passport endorsement. Approved foreign workers will receive both documents, with the card providing an additional form of proof of their right to live and work in Guyana.
