Google and NASA Are Building AI Robot Doctor for Space

Google is working with NASA to develop an AI-powered robot that could help astronauts handle medical emergencies during future missions to the Moon and Mars.

The robot is being designed to assist astronauts with medical tasks, move equipment, organize supplies, and perform routine maintenance.

According to Google, the experimental system has already achieved an 85% success rate in an early laboratory test involving locating and moving a medical bag.

However, the robot is still in development and is not ready to perform medical procedures independently.

Why Astronauts Could Need an AI Medical Robot

Astronauts traveling to Mars could face serious problems if someone becomes sick or injured during a mission.

Because Mars is so far from Earth, communication between astronauts and doctors on the ground could experience significant delays.

According to Google, messages sent between Earth and Mars could take up to 44 minutes for a round trip.

This means astronauts may not be able to receive immediate medical advice during an emergency.

To address this problem, Google and NASA are developing a robot that could assist crew members when medical help from Earth is delayed.

The project builds on the Crew Medical Officer Digital Assistant, an AI medical support system that Google and NASA began testing in 2025.

The earlier system was designed to help astronauts understand health problems and make medical decisions when immediate assistance from Earth is unavailable.

The new project aims to add physical assistance through a robot that can move around and handle equipment.

How Google’s AI Robot Would Work

The robot is being designed to follow spoken instructions from astronauts and help with different tasks inside a spacecraft.

For example, if an astronaut experiences severe back pain that could indicate kidney stones, the robot could retrieve an ultrasound machine and prepare it for use.

The astronaut responsible for medical care would then examine the results and decide what treatment is necessary.

Google says the robot could eventually help with simple medical tasks, such as checking vital signs or assisting with ultrasound examinations.

However, it would not replace human medical personnel or make treatment decisions independently.

When medical assistance is not needed, the robot could perform other duties, including moving cargo, organizing tools, securing equipment, and helping with routine maintenance.

This could allow astronauts to spend more time on scientific research and other important tasks.

AI Robot Achieves 85% Success Rate in Early Tests

Google and NASA have already started testing the technology in laboratory conditions.

During one experiment, the robot was asked to locate a medical bag and move it to another location.

The system completed the task successfully in approximately 85% of the initial tests.

Although the result shows progress, it does not mean the robot is ready to perform medical examinations or assist during serious emergencies.

Researchers are also working on improving how the robot understands its surroundings and handles objects.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory is adapting technology originally developed to track objects in space to help the robot navigate inside a spacecraft.

The team is also using Google DeepMind’s MuJoCo simulation software to test the robot’s movements in a virtual environment before trying them on physical hardware.

Google says researchers have tested around 15 different computing devices to identify hardware that can run the AI system efficiently without consuming too much power.

This is important because spacecraft have limited electricity and computing resources.

When Will NASA Send the Robot to Space?

Google has not announced when the AI medical robot could be sent into space.

The project is currently in its early testing stage, and the company has not confirmed that a fully working, space-ready version has been completed.

The system is being developed through a collaboration involving Google Cloud, NASA’s Human Research Program, Johnson Space Center, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Researchers still need to improve its reliability, movement, and ability to perform tasks safely around astronauts.

Google’s long-term goal is to develop a robot that can understand simple voice commands and help crew members with both medical and everyday tasks.

If successful, the technology could provide additional support to astronauts on future missions where immediate help from Earth is impossible.
